A Personal Letter from the Founder

The real story behind why The Alison Bainbridge Grace Fund exists

"To the Houston nonprofit community,"

My birth mother was a prostitute and a drug addict. I was adopted as a baby—given a chance most kids in my situation never get. But when I was seventeen, my adoptive family kicked me out.

I became homeless. Not the kind of homeless you see in movies—I wasn't on the street with a cardboard sign. I was the invisible kind. Sleeping on couches, staying with friends, rotating between temporary places to lay my head while finishing high school and working full-time. This story is more common than you think, but people don't talk about it. Kids aging out of systems, families falling apart, teenagers left to figure it out on their own. I was one of those statistics everyone mentions but nobody actually sees.

No one saved me. I saved myself.

I worked full-time and went to school full-time because I knew education was my way out. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Social Work, then my Master's in Nonprofit Management—not because it was easy, but because I understood firsthand what it meant to need help and not have it. Every late night studying, every exhausted morning was fueled by a promise I made to myself during those nights when I didn't know where I'd sleep next.

The promise to God was simple: if I ever made it out, if I ever had stability, if I ever had money, I would give it away to organizations that help people like me. People who society forgets. People who are fighting to survive while everyone else is living.

The Alison Bainbridge Grace Fund isn't just charity—it's a commitment to sustainable partnerships. Every dollar comes from my paycheck, funding Houston nonprofits while inspiring the next generation to give differently. This isn't wealth giving back. This is creating lasting relationships that transform communities through intentional, mission-driven support.

Should I even call myself a philanthropist? I build partnerships from my heart, from my memory of what it feels like to have nothing, from my promise to inspire young givers to lead change and create sustainable relationships with organizations making real impact.

That's why this fund exists. That's why I build partnerships, not just provide grants. That's why I inspire young givers to lead change. That's why every sustainable relationship matters.

Gratitude & Recognition

To those who opened their homes to me when I was 17 and 18 — you gave me shelter when I had none. To my high school teachers who encouraged me to keep going, and to the principal who quietly handed me snacks so I wouldn't go hungry — you have not been forgotten.

To my professors at the University of Houston–Downtown, in both the Social Work and Nonprofit Management programs, thank you for pouring into me the knowledge, discipline, and perspective that continue to guide my work today.

To Sarah Ghandour — our paths crossed when I was just 20, sitting in a nail salon still trying to figure out who I was. You saw something in me that I couldn't yet see myself. You pushed me to finish my degree, and gave me the chance to work with you so I could pay my bills and stay afloat. More than a decade later, you are still my friend and mentor. I love you.

And to those who came into my life and later left — thank you too. Every person, every challenge, every act of kindness, and every lesson — big or small — shaped the woman I am today.

This journey has never been mine alone. It has been built on the faith, compassion, and generosity of others. For that, I remain forever grateful.

With love and gratitude,
Alison Bainbridge
